LET’S hope a role-playing exercise at Nomad’s annual meeting isn’t a true representation of Barry and Jeni Wood’s home life.

The couple, who are both former mayors of Henley and now live in Peppard Common, attended the Henley youth and community project’s celebration on Monday evening.

They volunteered to help demonstrate the importance of listening.

Reading from a piece of paper, Mr Wood told his wife: “Jeni, you have been out, you’ve spent money on non-essential things. We can’t afford it because we’re poor pensioners.

“Also this morning you left a door open and the central heating is working overtime and we’re spending lots of money on the heating and you don’t give a damn. So what are you going to do about it to make me happy?”

At this point Sue Prior, Nomad’s project lead and family support worker, jumped in to stop Mr Wood, saying: “Okay, I think that’s enough.”

As the guests giggled, she added: “What did you notice about your wife listening?”

Mr Wood replied: “She was very attentive. Normally I’m very loving!”

As the couple returned to their seats, one man joked: “Did you want a lift home, Barry?”
