THE death of comedienne Victoria Wood last week saw tributes from fans and colleagues across the country.

Fawley resident Phillip Schofield offered his condolences on This Morning and revealed that the 62-year-old, who died after a short battle with cancer, had paid his wife Stephanie’s rent.

Schofield explained: “My wife worked with Victoria Wood in one of her series when they were doing Acorn Antiques and said that she was such a wonderful generous lady. At that time in her life Steph was very young and just starting out. They were all sat around discussing whether or not Steph could afford her rent or whatever it was, and Victoria said to her, ‘No I’ll sort you out, it’s fine’.

“She lent her some money which Steph wanted to pay back. But she said ‘No, no darling it’s absolutely fine, don’t worry’. So really such a sweet and kind, lovely lady.”
