THE ministry team at Holy Trinity Church in Henley enjoys playing jokes on the congregation.
In a recent edition of the parish newsletter, readers were warned that the ground beneath the church might be dug up to investigate the remains of a Roman villa.
The article explained that a cornice bracket had been found after a hole appeared in the churchyard in January and further investigation had revealed the insignia of Magnus Maximus, who was the commander of Roman Britain from 383 to 388 AD.
If a full excavation was required, it could have “devastating consequences” for the future of the church.
However, while it’s true that a small section of churchyard collapsed earlier this year, the rest of the story was an April fool.
In previous years, the newsletter has warned that energy companies would be “fracking” for gas beneath the church and that visitors would be required to attend wearing carpet slippers.
Rev Duncan Carter, the vicar, says: “It’s a noble tradition for us. People in the congregation love spotting it.”
