THE aesthetic merit of the art on display at last week’s Henley Festival appeared to sail over some guests’ heads.

One striking example that dominated the festival lawn was a large, circular mirrored sculpture by Alan Wilson, who lives on Sir William and Lady McAlpine’s estate at Fawley Hill.

But while many visitors stood back respectfully admiring its geometry, others leant in closely for more practical reasons — to adjust their hair and make-up!
