But this wasn’t the case for DJ Mike Read and T’Pau’s Carol Decker.
The pair, who both live in Henley, decided to make the most of this year’s Henley Festival.
The T’Pau frontwoman visited on Thursday night and met headliner Elvis Costello, posing for a selfie with the She singer.
Writing on Twitter she said: “It’s only me with Elvis Costello. I met a musical hero. Lovely bloke too.” Perhaps Costello can return the favour when Decker next appears at the Rewind South festival, held at Temple Island Meadows, just up the road.
Meanwhile, Read, who lives in Mill Lane, enjoyed Dame Shirey Bassey’s performance on a boat on the River Thames.
As the DJ passed the “floating” stage the Welsh singer, with a glass of bubbly in hand, spotted him.
He wrote on Twitter: “Dame Shirley is gracious enough to raise a glass as I pass on the river.”
It’s fair to say, then, that with the abundance of black ties, boats and champagne Henley Festival is unlike any other.
A world away from muddy fields and Wellington boots, it moved one reviewer to describe it as a “glamorous wonderland”.
She even went as far as to call it “more dreamy than a Lewis Carroll vision”.
