Nowell scores hat-trick as Woodcote progress in cup

LAST Saturday saw Henley Town, Woodcote, Goring United and Wargrave all progress to the second round of the Berkshire Trophy Centre Senior Cup.

HENLEY TOWN went through after defeating visitors CAVERSHAM UNITED 4-1 on penalties after the match had ended in a 1-1 draw at The Triangle Ground.

Henley started brightly and after a few early chances opened the scoring on 10 minutes when left back Brodie Hatfield broke down the left flank and his cross was helped out to James Griffiths who took the ball in his stride and hit a low right-foot shot into the corner of the net past keeper Nabil Osman.

Caversham started to grow into the game and were the better side for the rest of the first half coming close with a header against the crossbar before equalising with a free kick from 25 yards by Bevan Van Wyk that gave debutant Town keeper Ben Palmer no chance.

Henley created a further couple of chances with Griffiths coming close again and striker Harry Taylor with a strike from 30 yards that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

The second half saw possession more even with neither team having many clear chances. Dan York and Alberto Gingell with a couple of long-range efforts failed to hit the target.

With the game being taken to a penalty shoot-out with Town players Gingell, Griffiths and Markland Tidswell all scoring it left teenager Hatfield to convert the decisive spot kick to seal victory and a place in the next round.

WOODCOTE eased into the next round of the competition with a 6-0 home win against FLEET SPURS.

The opening goal came after 14 minutes when Andy Taylor’s flighted corner was volleyed home by Henry Leadbetter-Hart.

The dynamic duo were at it again after 27 minutes with Taylor splitting the defence with an inch-perfect long ball and Leadbetter-Hart heading home for 2-0.

The third goal came on
36 minutes when Taylor played a short corner to Lewis Mills who left several defenders in his wake before pulling the ball back for Toby Nowell to score from close range.

Several clear-cut chances were missed in the opening minutes of the second half before Nowell made it 4-0 on the hour mark with a tap-in from Sam Primmer’s unselfish pass.

In the 80th minute it was 5-0 when Joe Parry latched on to keeper Ben Lallament’s long ball to find the net. Sam Primmer then smashed a shot from distance goalwards only to see it rebound from the angle of the goal and then the same player saw his shot rebound off an upright straight to Nowell who completed his hat-trick to make it 6-0.

Fred Kirby netted twice and Harri Douglas was on target as WARGRAVE defeated visitors AFC READING 3-2 at Cantley Park.

GORING UNITED make it through to the next round of the competition after defeating WOKINGHAM TOWN RESERVES 1-0 at Sheepcot Recreation Ground. Bertie Spencer netted the only goal of the match.
