Spot-on Ellis keeps his cool as visitors run out of charge

AFC HENLEY HURRICANES U15s started their 2026 campaign with a 3-2 win at home to BINFIELD CHARGERS U15s last Saturday.

On a morning of waterlogged pitches, the Hurricanes fixture was able to go ahead on their new artificial surface at Jubilee Park. The ball moved quickly, and there were chances for both teams in the opening minutes, although neither side took control of the game.

That changed after
10 minutes when the Chargers opened the scoring through a well-taken shot from outside the area. The visitors had the upper hand, forcing a number of fine saves from goalkeeper George Hodges.

The game came to life after 15 minutes of the second half. Tommy Greenham and Adam Hanley collected Dominic Ellis’s long throw-in and worked together to take the ball down the right side. Hanley’s cross found Luca Currie, who was perfectly placed to slot home.

Three minutes later the Hurricanes were ahead. Ellis’s long free kick was blocked by the defence, but Nicholas Hernandez St Clair pounced on the rebound and headed home.

The Chargers levelled the score through a free kick from the edge of the box.

For a while it looked like the match was heading for a draw, but with 10 minutes left on the clock the Hurricanes were awarded a penalty. Greenham had been brought down when through on goal, and Ellis coolly placed his shot past the keeper into the bottom corner.

The Chargers pressed hard for another equaliser, but the Hurricanes worked hard to hold on for the victory.
