What ho! Fans of PG Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster stories adore reading, re-reading and yes, re-re-reading the endless scrapes of the nice-but-dim Wooster and his indispensable butler Jeeves; the literary equivalent of a settling into a cosy sofa with tea and biscuits and a side of serious rib-tickling.
Now’s the chance to see the comic tales brought to hilarious life as Peep Show’s Robert Webb steps into the perfectly turned-up trousers of likeable toff Bertie Wooster, in Perfect Nonsense at the Oxford Playhouse from next week.
Bertie, always willing to rally to a cry for help, steps in when his lovelorn pal Gussie’s latest love affair hits the rocks. All he has to do is steal a silver cow creamer... Thankfully the loyal, ever resourceful and considerably more intelligent Jeeves is ready to shimmer to the rescue as the hapless aristocrat stumbles from one tight corner into another.
The show picked up the 2014 Olivier Award and those yet to discover the joy of Wodehouse will leave as converts, especially those who find wry recognition in having “the look of one who had drunk the cup of life and found a dead beetle at the bottom.”
