CARL DAVIS teaches and competes in the style of the International Taekwondo Federation, which was founded by General Choi Hong Hi, a ninth dan from South Korea.
Gen Choi personally evolved and brought the sport to fruition during the Thirties and Forties before it was officially named by the Korean Government in 1955. The names and symbolism of the traditional patterns in this style refer to elements of Korean history, culture and religious philosophy.
Taekwondo is known for its emphasis on kicking techniques, which distinguishes it from martial arts such a karate or southern styles of kung fu.
It develops the exponent’s strength, speed, balance, flexibility and stamina. Students are sometimes taught to break wooden boards, bricks and tiles by harnessing both physical and mental strength.
Alongside traditional taekwondo there is also “sport taekwondo”, which puts the emphasis on speed and competition rather than self-defence. This is the style that is currently used in the Olympics but there is an ongoing battle to switch to traditional taekwondo.
