ROCHEPINE MANOIR is the perfect place to relax and unwind in the heart of the French countryside and the beautiful department of the Charente, writes Simon Home.
It is a house packed full of character and history.
With a stream bordering on two sides of the property you are never far from the restful and hypnotic sound of water and in fact yoga retreats are regularly held at the house.
There is plenty to see and do in this lovely area, but I quite often say to people staying at the house that rather than rush around they should let the house take over.
The house lends itself to another pace of life and it is far better to do as the locals do and visit local markets at Piégut or Angoulême and buy delicious local produce, come back and prepare wonderful tasting breakfasts, lunches or dinners and then sleep, read and relax around the pool area or go for walks or cycle along the nearby green route.
It also makes sense to pick up some of the locally produced Bordeaux wines, a fine Entre Deux Mers with oysters from Charente Maritime or a Margaux Red might go well with a rich Beef Daube or Venison Civet.
Not far from the house is the Dordogne, so if you wish to sally forth and explore the local countryside there is much to see.
Nearby is the Chateau at Rochefoucauld with its beautiful Leonardo da Vinci staircase. It makes for a lovey visit. Also close by is the town of Brantôme — the Venice of the area and a great place to relax by one of the waterways and try one of its excellent restaurants. At one point, Brantôme boasted more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other town in France.
