FAVOURED with a sunny and very warm day on Saturday, Henley and District Agricultural Association’s show, which has not had a really hot day since 1927, attracted a record attendance. There was a best ever entry of some 700 in the horse and pony section, although the latter proved something of an embarrassment to Harry Pates, the senior ring steward, as time did not permit the holding of the “hit-and-hurry” jumping class, for which there was an entry of about 50. A number of would-be competitors were sharply critical.
An Egyptian princess who left her country with her English husband at the time of the Suez crisis was found guilty of careless driving on the Henley to Reading Road at Shiplake on July 6. She appeared before Mr J E Chalcraft, Lady Brunner and Mr A J Hitchman at Henley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was fined £15. Her licence was endorsed and she was ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses of £2 15s. Princess Fazil, an antiques dealer, fractured her left fibia, cut her right knee and broke a tooth after hitting a grass verge at 9pm.
The fourth fire to cause considerable damage in less than a year broke out at Bottom House Farm, Mapledurham, on Saturday. As in the case of the three earlier fires, no natural explanation of the cause was forthcoming despite intense police activity.
