MR T J BEALES, of Northfield End, Henley, a 19-year-old apprentice compositor at the Henley printing firm of Messrs Higgs & Co, was recently awarded a certificate in the typographic design section of the design for printing competition organised annually by the British Federation of Master Printers. Mr Beales, who also attends the Berkshire College of Art, was among 433 competitors from all over the country who entered this section of the competition, with just over half being successful in gaining awards.
Believed to be one of three masts originally intended for ships, Leander Club’s flagpole was blown down into the gardens on Saturday afternoon just before the Oxford crew were going out to practise on the regatta course. The 80ft pole has been flying the club’s flag for many years while the two other flagpoles are thought to be in Henley.
Cecil Stanley Holton, a member of an old Henley family, is to become head of Carew Manor School, a school for educationally subnormal boys and girls aged seven to 16 in the new London borough of Sutton. Educated at Henley Grammar School, Mr Holton spent six years with the Royal Air Force, his service spanning the war years and taking in four years in Singapore and India.
