A MAN was threatened with a knife and beaten around the head with a brick as he helped tackle two men trying to steal a car. His neighbour in Peppard Road, Sonning Common, came home at 8.12pm on Thursday last week to find both his and next door’s garage doors open. As he went to investigate, he saw his car being reversed out of the garage. He hit the central locking on the key fob to lock the thief inside but the thief wound down a window, scrambled out and tried to run off. The owner was joined by his neighbour and a passing driver and tackled the thief to the ground but then his accomplice showed up and threatened the men with a knife before beating the 64-year-old around the head with the brick.

Working pensioners will not be entitled to a discount at Henley’s cinema under rules introduced by the new management. Previously, anyone over 60 could see a film at the Regal for £4.25, £2 less than the normal ticket price. Now the concession is being limited to customers who are fully retired.

Shiplake Parish Council is to give £500 to a £25,000 appeal for repairs to the parish church’s tower. The estimated cost of the work is £65,000 and the parochial church council has raised £40,000.
