Déjà vu for Henley with back-to-back defeats

Déjà vu for Henley with back-to-back defeats

DESPITE winning on three of the five Oddfellows Triples League rinks at home to PALMER PARK on Wednesday of last week, HENLEY went down to a 99-77 defeat. The hosts picked up six points from the fixture to the visitors’ eight.

Dave Wilson, with Steve Sullivan and Sally Daniells, dropped a seven early on but were 11-6 down after nine ends, 14-11 after 12 ends and, although they dropped another seven, scored steadily to win 22-19.

Kevin Currill, with Andy Scott and Angelika Crisa, started strongly with a five and led throughout to win 20-9 while John Munnelly, with Martin Cranstoun and Glynis Holland, couldn’t match their opponents and went down 25-10.

Kevin Browne, with Peter Falle and Jo Wilson, led from the start, were 10-3 up after end six and picked up a five on end 11. By the 13th end they led by 10 and although Park closed the gap, Henley won 22-16. Peter Borsberry, with Ian Gibson and Joan Edwards, struggled throughout the match going down 30-3.

It was a similar story for HENLEY on Saturday as they visited MAIDEN ERLEGH in the same competition where, once again, they won on three of the five rinks but went down to an 89-82 defeat. Henley gained six points to the hosts’ eight.

John Munnelly, with Andy Scott and Jo Wilson, started strongly, leading 13-0 after four ends and ran out 22-11 winners. Kevin Currill, with Sally Daniells and Nigel Bridges, were evenly matched 7-8 after nine ends and slightly behind after 15 ends at 14-12. Henley finished strongly to win 19-15.

Dave Wilson, with Peter Falle and Joan Edwards, were level 16-16 after 17 ends but then managed to score two on the final end to win 18-16. Simon Hatcher, with Peter Borsberry and Angelika Crisa, were also evenly matched, trailing 14-13 after 15 ends but dropped five over the final ends to lose 19-13. Kevin Browne, with Martin Cranstoun and Glynis Holland, went down 28-10.

On Sunday HENLEY defeated THAME in a four mixed triples friendly, 78-64.

Kevin Currill, with Ramsay Adams and Glynis Holland, led from the start, were well up after nine ends and although they were gradually pegged back over the second half of the game, they won 23-19.

Kevin Browne, with Peter Menhinick and Joan Edwards, were evenly matched 10-9 after 12 ends, then pulled away to win 19-13. Peter Borsberry, with Karen Wakeling and Peter Goddard, started slowly, were 10 down after eight ends, picked up a five and had drawn level at 15-15 by the 14th end but couldn’t maintain their momentum going down 19-15.

Dave Wilson, with Andy Scott and Andrea Tate, started strongly, were eight up after nine ends and picked up a five on end 15 and although Thame fought back, they were unsuccessful as the home rink ran out 21-13 winners.

SHIPLAKE lost their opening Oddfellows Triples League match of the season on Saturday when they went down 92-72 at home to HURST with the rinks being drawn as both sides won two each with one draw. Shiplake’s best performing triple was that of Janet Townley, Dave Bullock and Tony Reid, 23-7. The triple of Jean Buckett, Pete Leverett and Graham Kennedy found themselves 12-4 down after seven ends but recovered to win 19-17.

Jane Ward, Jeff Harris and Wendy Cross took part in the drawn game for Shiplake. The rink went down to the wire and the calipers were required to decide who was closest on the final end, which went to Hurst to leave the score 12-12.

WARGRAVE lost out 67-51 in their home Kennet League clash against WOKINGHAM B on Tuesday of last week. Wargrave picked up two league points to the visitors’ 12.

After a touch of overnight rain, the green was running heavy and Wokingham consistently played long jacks. Wokingham made a good start with early wins on all rinks except one.

Around ends 11 and 12 Wargrave started to make comeback bringing all rinks either ahead or within one shot down but after a close clash, the hosts lost out on the final shots of the final ends.

On rink one on the third end the long jack was causing problems for all, other than a single shot for Wokingham from their lead. Wargrave skip, Keith Sykes came within millimetres of taking the shot on his last but the lead wood held as Wokingham won 15-10.

On rink two the score remained within one or a draw all game only for Wargrave to miss out on the last end to go down 17-13.

Lead Tony Annetts’ first wood held shot on the third rink for the whole end until the Wokingham skip’s last wood knocked it on and replaced for shot. After drawing and then being one up or one down, Wokingham took the last end with a six shot finish to win 20-12.

Rink four had Wargrave ahead by one or two shots for the whole match until that final end again as Wokingham won 16-15.
