TV star Marcus Bean is returning to Shiplake College to host an array of cookery events at the Henley on Food festival co-founded by fellow Old Viking Harriet Reed.
The festival this week announced that it is working with Marcus, who has agreed to hang up his apron at his Brompton Cookery School, dig out his school tie and return to Shiplake College for a series of events over the festival weekend of April 30 and May 1.
Best known for regular stints on ITV’s This Morning, and from sharing a stage with the likes of James Martin, Tom Kerridge and Mary Berry at the BBC Good Food Show, Marcus is set to compere a range of demonstration events — and he’s delighted to be back in town.
He said: “Henley is a really special place for me — I grew up here, played at Henley Rugby Club and my parents used to be licensees at a couple of Brakspear’s pubs — so Henley on Food marks a brilliant homecoming.
“I can’t wait to return to Shiplake College to host events with some truly brilliant chefs — how great to see the likes of John Torode, Cyrus Todiwala and Frances Quinn on a Shiplake stage.”
Speaking of her return to the school, festival founder Harriet Reed said: “I was so lucky to go to Shiplake College for sixth form and feel even luckier to be bringing the first Henley on Food to the beautiful school and its fantastic setting — even though the first-day-at-school nerves have returned.”
Headmaster Gregg Davies added: “I’m delighted that Shiplake is hosting the Henley on Food festival. We are also very proud that two of the main characters involved in the event are Old Vikings — Harriet Reed, who is organising the event, and Marcus Bean, who will be providing live interviews with the excellent line-up over the entire weekend.
The reaction to this innovative and exciting event has been astoundingly positive, and we’re looking forward to a fantastic turnout across the weekend.”
The festival runs from 9.30am to 6pm on both days. Tickets are priced £7 for a “daily roamer” pass or £12 for a “weekend roamer”. Entry is free for under-12s accompanied by a ticket-holding adult.
Children will also be able to enjoy the River and Rowing Museum’s picnic area with storytelling, games and appearances from Mr Toad, as well as the thinking space activity zone — for no charge, with tickets needed only for author events and cookery classes.
