“INDUSTRIAL folk” may sound like a contradiction in terms, but that’s what’s being served up by Hartlepool-based five-piece the Jar Family when they visit the Crooked Billet in Stoke Row on Monday evening.
The pub’s chef-proprietor Paul Clerehugh has declared himself a huge fan of the group, who all contribute to the songwriting and include former Squeeze bassist Keith Wilkinson.
He said: “Imagine a band made up of five lead singers, five frontmen, five Lennon and McCartneys. Rather than strive for solo success they decided to pool their talents. The idea of five very different personalities, a wide range of musical styles working together harmoniously seems unlikely, but the results are stunning.”
The band take their name from the donations jar that was passed around at their early gigs. But more than 400 live shows on they have developed an impressive reputation and recently headlined the Stockton Calling festival.
Paul Clerehugh added: “One looks like a Sixties Dylan, whilst another is an archetypical stevedore type with waistcoat, bowler hat and tattoos and looks like he spits rivets into ship plates for a living. A lucid Bez Happy Mondays top-hatted character. Oh, it’s going to be brilliant.”
The Crooket Billet will be serving its full, regular menu on Monday night. A £12.50 music cover charge will apply. For tickets and table reservations, call the pub on (01491) 681048.
