NEW Reading manager Brian McDermott says his Royals return was the "right thing to do".
The 54-year-old was unveiled as Steve Clarke's replacement at the Madejski Stadium yesterday (Thursday).
McDermott told a press conference "You don?t come back for sentimental reasons. For me it?s the right thing to do.
"I?m very grateful for the opportunity. It wasn?t a tough call to come back into management."
McDermott resigned from his scouting job at Arsenal on Friday last week and he feels the experience with the Gunners and as manager at Leeds before that has been a benefit.
"I?m more experienced," he said. "Whether I am better, results will tell. I?ve had experience at Leeds and at Arsenal. Hopefully with that comes wisdom. We shall see."
McDermott says he felt Reading has a structure in place to move the club forward and it's time for everyone to pull together.
He said: "I want everyone at the club to work together. It?s about all of us. It?s about trying to win games of football. We?ve got some good, talented players. We?ve got to pull together.
"There?s a talent in the group, it?s a good squad of players. Need to get momentum, that?s what this league is all about."
In McDermott's first stint as manager he guided the Royals to Premier League promotion in 2012, which included a run of 15 wins from 17 games.
But he left the club in March 2013 with the club in the Premier League relegation zone.
The Royals failed to survive in the top flight and have remained in the Championship ever since.
McDermott's appointment comes two weeks after Clarke, the former West Brom manager and Chelsea assistant, was shown the exit after a year in charge.
The Scot, who had turned down the chance to take over Fulham in November, presided over 53 games, winning 19, drawing 14 and losing 20.
Reading?s under-21s manager Martin Kuhl has taken charge of first-team management duties for the last two games, which brought two defeats.
In his final match on Wednesday, the Royals conceded a last-minute goal as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Hull City.
McDermott?s first game in charge will be against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday at the Madejski Stadium (kick-off at 3pm).
