Carrigan’s header helps side progress

WOODCOTE progressed to the third round of the Oxfordshire Cup in West Oxfordshire on Tuesday of last week against a team that play two levels above in the Combined Counties Premier Division.

Defending the bottom end of the sloping pitch in the first half, Woodcote had to dig deep in the opening minutes to withstand the wave of attacks from the home team.

Against the run of play Woodcote took the lead after
15 minutes. The home keeper failed to hold a corner from the right by Andy Taylor and Toby Nowell was on hand to fire home from close range.

North Leigh hit back but Woodcote’s defence remained resolute until the 30th minute when a flowing move from the home side ended with a cross from the left and a close-range headed goal to equalise.

Woodcote finished the first half on the attack with Mark Spruyt unlucky not to score in the last minute as his shot was blocked on the line.

Playing down the slope in the second half Woodcote were rarely troubled by the home side and took the lead on the hour mark from another set piece when Archie Clark’s corner was headed home by Lewis Carrigan.
