Now’s the time to plant fruit and treat the lawn before winter sets in

THIS month there is plenty to do in your garden from planting bulbs, trees and plants to raking leaves.

It’s all about preparing for spring and getting your garden ready to hibernate for the winter. It is the perfect time for planting all kinds of fruit. Soft fruit includes raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and rhubarb. Fruit trees can also be planted now, such as apples, pears, plums and cherry trees.

You can plant new trees and shrubs directly in the ground or in large containers. As they spend less time growing new leaves and seeds at this time of year, they can focus on establishing a solid root system.

There is still time to treat and maintain your lawn and plants. Whether you are seeding a new lawn or returfing, the autumn rains will ensure it gets the best start in life. And don’t forget that now is the ideal time for planting spring flowering and summer flowering bulbs, such as daffodils, crocus, hyacinths and alliums.

Visit Stubbings Garden Centre, between Henley and Maidenhead, for helpful advice and personal recommendations from their extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. They are a family-owned independent garden centre who pride themselves on quality plants from quality growers.

They also have a wonderful little café with the most amazing scones.
