Harrison retains men’s title while newcomer secures club’s ladies’ crown

MAPLEDURHAM Lawn Tennis Club held their annual tournament finals at their Caversham Heights courts.

All the matches were competitive throughout and umpired by Rob Foster, Caroline Cordy, Bernardo Guerreiro, Stephan Cohen, Craig Wright and Dave Maynerd.

The day started with the vets men’s singles when in a long and hard-fought match David Maynerd beat Armand Kirk in a championship tie-break 10-8 after losing the first set 5-7 and winning the second set 6-4.

Although all the remaining matches were won in straight sets, numerous long rallies and deuces kept spectators entertained.

The ladies’ singles was won by new member Katherine Young who beat Leslie Maynerd 6-1, 6-2.

Max Harrison retained his men’s singles title by beating Alex Denovan 6-4, 6-2 after many long, fast and exciting rallies.

The ladies’ and men’s doubles finalists saw Sally Foster and Jane Lang beating Sarah Smith and Helen Chewter 6-2, 6-2 while Max Harrison and Lawrence Wilks beat Bernardo Guerreiro and Alex Denovan 6-2, 6-1.

The day finished with mixed doubles where Fiona Roach and Max Harrison were on top form as they beat Suada Bale and Kirk Perkins 6-0, 6-0.
