WILLY Russell’s comedy about an unconventional friendship and class differences, Educating Rita, is being performed by Reading Rep next month.

Liverpudlian hairdresser Rita wants more out of life, so she enrols on an Open University course, led by Frank, a professor who is facing divorce and a drinking problem. Their meeting sets them both on an interesting new path.

The play premiered in London in June 1980, with Julie Walters playing the lead role. Three years later, she starred in the film adaptation alongside Michael Caine.

Educating Rita is at Reading Rep Theatre in King’s Road, Reading, from Thursday, February 26 to Saturday, March 21.

Tickets cost from £22 to £26.50 and the show, which is suitable for ages 14 and over, has a running time of two hours.
