AS the information board here says, “This site contains the best and most complete set of training trenches left in the UK and plays an important role in recording the history of that time.”
This is the 68 acres of Pullingshill Wood, just beyond Medmenham, much of which is ancient semi-natural woodlands and a Site of Special Scientific Interest which has been managed since 1991 by the Woodland Trust.
Here you can see what is left 1,400m of First World War training trenches. Originally two metres high by two metres wide, they are now barely noticeable in places but mark where preparation for a new kind of combat was built in 1915 by the Grenadier Guards.
