Hidden Henley

THE quiet single-track road through fine countryside at what we now call Bix Bottom is ancient and it passes the church ruins photographed in low dappled light in my picture, which have now been renovated and enclosed, with an information board at the entrance.

It is a welcome place to find peace nowadays, although there is evidence of settlements here for more than 1,600 years and it is likely to have been far busier in the past. The area was referred to as Bixa Brand in the Domesday Book.

Such romantic ruins are rare in these parts and a local Chilterns walk to include them is highly recommended.
