HUNDREDS of people attended this year’s Sonning show and fete.
The event, held in the grounds of Sonning Primary School, featured dozens of stalls and fairground games as well as a flower, produce and cookery contest.
Twenty-one awards were presented, including the Wethered Flower Cup for the overall winner, which went to Oliver Vass.
Jane Harvey won the Mavis Smith Cup for best floral arrangement while the prizes for the child and infant with most points went to Eve and Grace Carr respectively.
Tomas Frost, 11, a former pupil of the primary school, won the Sonning Glebe Women’s Institute Cup for best Victoria sponge.
Mary Winnett, who was competing for the first time, won the open flower class. She and her friend Diane West, another newcomer, also submitted two joint entries.
The fete included a performance by the village’s Dancercise group and a Maypole dance by school pupils.
There was an art exhibition, a display of model trains, a bouncy castle and a beer tent and barbecue run by the village’s working men’s club. The day ended with tug of war tournament which was won by a team of teachers and parents.
Headteacher Jill Kelsall allowed pupils to gunge her in exchange for a donation to school funds. Members of the Sonning Glebe Women’s Institute, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, were serving teas the entire day.
Organiser Carole Collier said: “It was an absolutely amazing day and I’m sure attendance was up on last year. The weather helped but it was an excellent turnout considering we held it a week later than usual. We had lots of entries in the floral section and saw some amazing arrangements.”
