Ex-stables are a design thoroughbred

Ex-stables are a design thoroughbred

Local architectural firm Intelligent Design Homes created a “unique architectural delight” when it converted horse racing stables near Wallingford into an uber-stylish five-bedroom house

THIS time of year isn’t only known for Halloween and Bonfire Night — it’s also filled with building and construction-related happenings, including the Offsite Construction Show, the final of the RICS Awards (see story on front page) and the London Build exhibition.

With this in mind, property correspondent Lucy Boon found an outstanding local architectural property near Wallingford for sale.

On the outskirts of the Astons (the quaint villages of Aston Upthorpe and Aston Tirrold, which function as one community), the property was christened The Dutch Barn in a nod to the curved-roofed farm buildings of that name.

“Five homes were created from the former racing stables of Frimley Park, one of which is this corner-plot property, The Dutch Barn,” said Tanya Wicks at the Henley branch of Davis Tate, which is marketing the properties. “We believe this is the first development of its kind, and won’t be surprised if it wins an architectural prize for innovation.”

Giving a twist on the traditional, The Dutch Barn is beautifully crafted from steel, wood, bricks and glass to create an amazing home full of space and sophistication.

Highlights include the impressive 15ft barn doors, sculptured staircase (modelled on London Bridge) and full-height arched hall. Attention to detail includes the cast-iron driftwood handles on the front doors, Brazilian leathered marble work surfaces, floor-to-ceiling feature window, and 360-degree fireplace.

Kitchen appliances are by uber-luxury brand Gaggenau, there is a hand-made American black walnut wine store, and walls are decorated with architectural-paint-of-choice Farrow & Ball.

“Everywhere you look is a talking point,” said Tanya. “Each room brings yet another delight and the property will appeal to only the most discerning of homeowners looking for their personal gem.”

There are five bedrooms and the master suite has a rounded vaulted ceiling and full-length box windows offering distant views across the countryside beyond.

The spacious en suite comes with a unique handcrafted round nickel-plated tin bath, along with its walk-in rain cloud shower.

Outside is a triple car port to the front and a spacious garden to the back, mainly laid to lawn.

“The designers used one of the original stable fixtures — a starting gate — as a feature here, which could be used to create seating or a bar area,” adds Tanya.

Altogether very impressive and very designer-y.
